Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom Endorses
Marc Berman for Assembly
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 25, 2016
State Assembly candidate and Palo Alto City Councilmember Marc Berman announced today that he has earned the endorsement of California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom.
“Marc represents the next generation of progressive leadership in California and I’m proud to endorse his campaign for the State Assembly. He has a background that includes local government, non-profit education advocacy and private sector employment. It’s an ideal combination of experience for his district and our state,” said Newsom. “I look forward to working with Marc to better position our economy for the 21st century, prepare students for jobs of the future, invest in our infrastructure, and foster the innovation so ingrained in the entrepreneurs and businesses in the 24th district and across our state.”
“I’m honored and excited to receive the endorsement of Lt. Governor Newsom,” said Berman. “Gavin has been a national leader on progressive issues throughout his career in public service, from taking a stand to marry same-sex couples as mayor of San Francisco in 2004 to leading the effort to increase gun safety for all Californians through his Safety for All initiative this year. Having his support is a huge boost to the campaign, both in the district and in Sacramento.”
Gavin Newsom was elected as the 49th Lieutenant Governor of California in 2010, and re-elected in 2014. In 2003, he was elected the Mayor of San Francisco, the city's youngest in a hundred years. Newsom was re-elected in 2007 with 72 percent of the vote. Prior to his time as mayor, Newsom served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 1997 to 2003.
With his endorsement of Berman, Newsom joins numerous state and local leaders in supporting Berman for State Assembly, including incumbent Assemblymember Rich Gordon, Speaker pro Tempore Kevin Mullin, Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith, and Supervisors Don Horsley and Warren Slocum, as well as former Supervisor Rose Jacobs Gibson.
