Equality California Endorsement

Equality California Endorses Marc Berman for State Assembly

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 18, 2016

State Assembly candidate and Palo Alto City Councilmember Marc Berman has earned the endorsement of Equality California in his campaign for the 24th Assembly District.

“Marc has a long history of fighting for social justice. Whether it was representing transgender victims of domestic violence in court, working to protect voting rights in minority communities and Native American reservations, or helping political refugees seeking asylum, Marc has a proven record of standing up for the voiceless,” said Rick Zbur, Executive Director of Equality California. “Marc is a strong ally of the LGBT community and we look forward to working with him to ensure that every Californian has equal rights.”

I'm running for the State Assembly because I want to fight to expand opportunity for every Californian. But we can’t expand opportunity before we’ve secured basic human rights, and one of the most fundamental rights is the ability to live free from fear and discrimination because of who you are. Today, that right is under attack across the country - most recently in North Carolina and Mississippi,” said Berman. “I look forward to working with Equality California to protect the rights of the LGBT community and continually strive to make California the most inclusive state in the country.”

Equality California is the nation’s largest statewide LGBT civil rights organization dedicated to creating a fair and just society. Equality California has worked to pass over 100 pieces of LGBT civil rights legislation in California, leading the effort to fight for marriage equality and transgender rights, and to fight against LGBT senior discrimination and youth homelessness.

With their endorsement of Berman, Equality California joins numerous state and local leaders in supporting Berman for State Assembly, including incumbent Assemblymember Rich Gordon, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, former California State Controller Steve Westly, Assembly Speaker pro Tempore Kevin Mullin, Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon, Assemblymember Rob Bonta, Assemblymember David Chiu, Assemblymember Phil Ting, Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen and Sheriff Laurie Smith, San Mateo County Supervisors Don Horsley, Dave Pine, Warren Slocum, and Adrienne Tissier, Sunnyvale Mayor Glenn Hendricks and Vice Mayor Gustav Larsson, Peninsula Young Democrats, Silicon Valley Young Democrats, California Labor Federation, AFSCME California PEOPLE, the Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA) Pacific Southwest Region, Northern California Carpenters Regional Council, Palo Alto Police Officers’ Association, and Palo Alto and San Mateo County Firefighters.
